NYS Company ADC USA Awarded Contract by Australian Organization

Lansing, NY based engineering and scientific consulting firm ADC USA (Advanced Design Consulting USA, Inc.), announced this morning that it has been awarded a contract by the Australian Nuclear Sciences and Technology Organization (ANSTO) in Australia to develop a small-angle neutron scattering instrument.

The instrument will be used for looking at sizes and structures of objects like polymer molecules and defect structures in metals and ceramics.

MicroGen's Looks to Implement Newest Tech Product

Technology company MicroGen is spotlighted in an article written by Cornell University and published in R&G Magazine. MicroGen recently unveiled their new BOLT energy technology that turns vibrations into electricity. MicroGen is a startup incubating in the Cornell Business and Technology Park and BOLT was developed using tools at the Cornell NanoScale Science and Technology Facility (CNF).

MicroGen plans to provide its technology for a variety of industrial and building applications. An immediate use, according to Robert Andosca, founder, president and CTO of MicroGen, would be in wireless tire pressure monitoring systems required in new automobiles since 2007. (Underinflated tires waste gas and make tire failure more likely.) Current units are powered by batteries that last only about three years, but the company's vibration-powered generator could last up to 20 years and is less expensive to manufacture, Andosca said. He also added that other sensors in cars, such as airbag accelerometers, could also go wireless too, he added. Wireless humidity sensors in clothes dryers are another possible application.

Technology Bringing Children and Doctors Together

In an article recently published on Syracuse.com, New York is using technology to better connect children with mental disorders and psychiatrists. The NewYork’s Office of Mental Health is set to join other states to venture into telepsychiatry. Telepsychiatry is the process of using live, interactive video conferencing for child psychiatrists to talk to families and their kids.

According to the article, studies say as much as 80 percent of children with mental disorders do not receive treatment, in part due to the shortage of child psychiatrists.While it is estimated that about 30,000 of them are needed to adequately treat children, there are only about 7,000 child psychiatrists practicing in the nation

The shortage has prompted New York’s Office of Mental Health to join other states to venture into telepsychiatry. It’s a promising development that will increase access to mental health care to those kids who don’t have it.

The need for telepsychiatry will grow as the under-18 population soars. The population of children is projected to grow by more that 40 percent in the next 50 years to more than 100 million, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

SU and Cornell in the Top Ten for Hedge Fund Feeder Schools

Hedge fund news website HFOberver recently released its list of top U.S. hedge fund feeder schools with both Cornell University and Syracuse making the top ten. Cornell tied for second, while SU tied for sixth overall.

HFObserver looked at the academic degrees held by more than 450 experienced professionals hired by hedge fund/alternative investment firms between January and July of 2011. Schools are ranked based on how many senior-level 2011 hires were alumni of each institution.

CenterState CEO to Host Startup Workshop at the Tech Garden

CenterState CEO will be hosting a workshop designed to help entrepreneurs with the start up of their businesses. “Startup Weekend” will be held from Nov. 4 to Nov. 6 at the Syracuse Technology Garden. CenterState describes it as a workshop where developers, designers, marketers, product managers, and innovators can share ideas, form teams, build products, and launch companies.

The upcoming workshop is the latest in a series of Startup Weekend’s that CenterState has hosted worldwide since 2007. CenterState states that its events have helped create 2,400 startup companies with thirty-six percent of them lasting longer than three months.

In the eyes of CenterState, the workshop has multiple benefits. Managing director for emerging business portfolio Mitchell Patterson said, “Beyond the possibility of adding some new companies to the local economy, participants will gain exposure to all aspects of starting a business and make connections with people in industries.” Patterson went on to say that CenterState hopes to conduct a workshop every six months in the Syracuse area.

Binghamton University and SUNY Upstate Look to Create Synergy

Binghamton University and SUNY Upstate Medical University have entered an articulation agreement that brings about benefits to both institutions in new ways along with an understanding for shared course offerings in the schools’ neuroscience graduate programs.

The agreement will allow a Binghamton University student who shows exceptional skills to be automatically admitted into SUNY Upstate Medical’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, and reserves, at minimum, one slot per year for an exceptional student to enroll in SUNY Upstate Medical University’s College of Graduate Studies to pursue a PhD in the biomedical sciences. The agreement will also allow both institutions to expand and diversify their curriculums in the neurosciences through the use of video-conferencing technology.

The institutions say they are exploring additional research partnerships in both cancer research and the neurosciences in hopes of helping each other make advancements. Binghamton President C. Peter Magrath stated, “One focus of our strategic plan is increased activity in the health and natural sciences, and this synergistic partnership in research and teaching is a win-win that will enrich the offerings available to our students.”

New York Earns Title of Top Entrepreneurial State in 2010

The State Entrepreneurship Index has named New York the top state for entrepreneurial activity in 2010. The index evaluated each state’s: percentage growth and per capita growth in business establishments, business formation rate, number of patents per thousand residents, and gross receipts of sole proprietorships and partnerships per capita.

New York’s strong ranking is credited to its strong performance in gross receipts per capita and substantial improvement in both growth-in-establishments and establishments per capita. New York has been consistent in entrepreneurialism, ranking number one in each of the past three years.

The State Entrepreneurship Index was founded by economists at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Bureau of Business Research and Department of Economics, and determined the ranking by collecting information from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the IRS Statistics of Income Bulletin, the U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S. Statistical Abstract.

Clarkson University and Partners Test Eco-Friendly Data Storage

Clarkson University and partners Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., Hewlett-Packard Company, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced a research project that is designed to try and implement eco-friendly technology in order to power data centers.

The user will see no difference between the old data processor and the new one. The only difference is that its power will come from both wind and solar energy. This can be seen as a result of the industry wide goal of using renewable energy to power data centers. Clarkson students will experiment effectively managing data on the renewable energy data centers.

The business initiative known as Creative Core has developed an app available for the iPhone, iPad, Android, and BlackBerry. Named the “Creative Core Connect” app, users will be able to access information of the 2,500 companies that Creative Core has in its directory. Sensis Develops Advanced Airport Efficiency System

Dewitt, NY company Sensis is developing a new operational system designed to improve airport gate efficiency. It is in addition to Sensis’ already established technology that provides a visual display for airport operators. The new technology will provide the airport operators with “recommendations” in order to achieve the most efficient procedure in regards to planes entering and exiting the gate area.
